Carson Center Announces Merger with Abilities Unlimited

Abilities Unlimited of Western New England, Inc., headquartered in Westfield, MA since 1976, announced today its merger with The Carson Center for Human Services, also headquartered in Westfield.

"The Carson Center shares with our organization a history of providing supports for people with developmental disabilities. Merging with the Carson Center gives both of our organizations an increased capacity to do the best work possible," said David Scanlin, Executive Director of Abilities Unlimited.

Programs developed by Abilities Unlimited will continue to serve the community under the management of the Carson Center. Kamp for KidsTM at Camp Togowauk, a popular two month summer program for children with and without disabilities, will open as usual on June 30th. AU's family support program, Assistive Communication Technology Center, PLUS summer employment program, Alternative Day Program, and Self-Advocacy program will continue to serve people throughout western Massachusetts.

"Abilities Unlimited has built a stellar reputation and we feel privileged to continue their work throughout the region" said Kathleen E. Damon, CEO of the Carson Center. "Our organization, which opened as a child guidance clinic in 1963, now offers a continuum of care--from therapy to substance abuse counseling, to rehabilitation for brain injury victims and early education services in the Palmer-Ware area from almost every town in western Massachusetts. The competent staff at AU will deepen and strengthen the resources available to those with developmental and learning disabilities."

The merger is effective as of July 1, 2008.
