Birthday BenevolenceDavid Jaffe of Easthampton was a staff member at the Carson Center from 1996 to 2006 and
for the past 10 years he has continued to attend our annual agency picnic and conduct the fun and exciting Jeopardy game impersonating Alex Trebec with creativity and resourcefulness.
On January 18, 2012, David continued a tradition he started three years ago to celebrate his birthday. This year for his 52nd he conducted a free Birthday Raffle at Thornes Marketplace in Northampton.
Each person who participated received a free raffle ticket and Jaffe donated $1 to one of four charities, according to that person's preference. The local charities included Northampton Survival Center, Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society and the Carson Center for Human Services. Participants got a chance to win a $52 gift card to Thornes Marketplace, a $52 gift card to Cedar Chest or a $52 donation to the charity of their choosing. David gave out 215 raffle tickets but additional money was donated by people passing by who wanted to give to the charities. A total of approximately $500 will be given to the charities from this event. I was awestruck, he said of the generosity of the donors, who gave without being asked. I don t represent any of the agencies, but still people were giving. They seemed inspired by the idea and it was very moving and gratifying to involve others in this.
On David 's 50th birthday, he gave $50 bills to the first 50 people to enter the Easthampton Community Center food pantry. In 2011 he did 51 good deeds on his 51st birthday including paying for coffee for strangers or giving gift bags to people he met on the street.
The reasoning behind this he explained, it s my birthday " the day I was given life and I like to give back.
Wonder what age 53 will inspire him to do.
